  • Screenshot tag

    desktop

Left monitor is my main monitor, I do everything on there.  Too many icons on my desktop, mostly just random things I download.  I’ll delete them eventually.  I also added a top toolbar set to auto hide, on the left side are shortcuts to the games I play and the right are shortcuts to remote tools.

Right monitor is purely for server monitoring and admin stuff.

  • Six weird things

I’ve been tagged.  This is what I think is weird about me.

    1. I organize my money and other things in my wallet.  I separate the 20s from the other small bills then I group the small bills in the order of 10s, 5s, 1s and fold them in half with the 10s on the inside.  I organize my cards by most used.

    2. I’m a man with few words.  Most of the time I either say a little or just enough in a conversation, I talk more when I’m intoxicated.

    3. I tend to collect things that I don’t need or rarely use.  Such as pens, matches, lighters, magazines, computer parts.  I’ve been pretty good lately about throwing away old magazines.  Even though I’m not a smoker I somehow like to own a few lighters.  I can never resist on taking matches from restaurants.

    4. I have my 3 essential furniture in my apartment.  Desk, bed and bookshelf, I also have a folding card table but I don’t consider that essential, I just use it as a place to put my mail.  Simple as that.

    5. I don’t have a microwave.  Sometimes I cook mostly on weekends, but I finish everything so it eliminates the need for one.  When I shop for groceries I only buy items that I can cook over the stove top or in the oven.  When I eat out, I finish everything so I don’t bring home leftovers.

    6. I find it amusing (for me) to scare the hairs off people.  I only do it to those I know well.  It doesn’t matter if you’re in a brightly lit room, I’ll find a way to scare you.

This is a tough post, I had to think about it for a few days to observe my own behavior.  What seems normal to me can be weird to you.

  • Random morning thoughts

If I get into an accident, I wish it doesn’t happen during rush hour.  When I walked to work this morning I was walking faster than a ambulance because the traffic was so jammed.

Why doesn’t the security guard (the one with the accent) know me?  I worked in the building for 3 years and have seen her numerous times before.  A while back she questioned me of casually walking into the building and asked to see my ID.  Today she asked me again!

The Kellogg’s® Special K® Bar chocolatey drizzle flavor is pretty good, but at only .8 OZ. doesn’t really fill me up.  On the carton it clearly says 1 bar per serving…I’m going to have another.

  • Yo-Yo

    YoYoJam KickSide

Yo-Yos, it is one of the greatest toys invented. I ordered a YoYoJam KickSide from TheYoStore.  When I ordered it on Monday I didn’t realize they were located in Hawaii and I thought it would take at least a whole week before I get my hands on it.  Well I’m happy & excited because I just got it, they even included a free pack of strings, brain lube and a suction cup to remove the side caps with.  The KickSide is a great starter/intermediate yo-yo, good for plenty of string tricks.  I myself haven’t been able to perform much tricks yet but I shall learn many, only time will tell.

Why did I get a yo-yo?  Well many of my friends and coworkers know that I keep a large rubber ball in my pocket and when we go out, it is my form of entertainment when I’m waiting.  The problem with the ball is that you need a surface or wall to bounce on and sometimes the surface isn’t so clean, so we would be left there standing and just talking.

Yo-Yos are pretty complex now, when I was a kid I remember they only have fixed axial.  Now there are ball bearings, o-rings, starbursts, and brake pads.  The yo-yos can be modified and upgraded.  Crazy!  Overall I’m happy with my starter yo-yo and slowly make my way up (maybe).

  • Evolution

The other day I was walking home with Adam and Mike, we stumbled upon a
cockroach and I kicked it. I couldn’t help but notice that it landed on its back
and became helpless, as I stood there watching it struggle trying to get back on
it’s feet I began to wonder “Why is it having such a hard time flipping itself
    over?!?!”

So I did some searching and found this website that answered my question and learned a few things. Here is the answer to my inquiry most important question:

Q6: Why do cockroaches die on their backs?

    A:
First, few cockroaches die on their backs in the wild. Natural death of
cockroaches probably occurs in the stomach of a bird, bat or other small
    animal.

Second, Cockroaches are not used to living on a polished marble or vinyl
floor. They are more used to a rugous living plane including
leaves and sticks and other vegetable debris. Thus when a cockroach
finds itself on its back (by some mistake in its orienteering) it may
have trouble righting itself if there is not debris around to grab hold
of with its legs. (Try it, put a cockroach on its back on a polished
floor with and without some crinkled paper.)

Third, often we come across dead cockroaches in buildings that have died
of insecticide. Most of these insecticides are organophosphate nerve
poisons. The nerve poison often inhibits cholinesterase, an enzyme that
breaks down acetyl choline (ACh), a neurotransmitter. With extra ACh in
the nervous system, the cockroach has muscular spasms which often result
in the cockroach flipping on its back. Without muscular coordination the
cockroach cannot right itself and eventually dies in its upside
    down-position.

To think that roaches have survived millions of years of evolution and they can’t even evolve a way to flip themselves back without aid (at least the ones in NYC). Perhaps that they don’t need to because they are no where near extinction. There are just too many of them in the city and if you don’t keep your home clean, they’ll find their way in.

  • Home

Finally arrived home 2 hrs ago, the long drive have ended.  I finally got to shower and relax, this road trip was fun even though it was quite a drive.  Time was a factor, so after the Grand Canyon it was a straight drive to Chicago, IL.  None of us really slept for 2 days, just a few hours here and there while one of us is driving.

The sky is so clear away from the city it was good to see so many stars again, I’ll have to update the Road Trip album later.
