G33K Post v3.0: Home Brew Systems
I have jumped on the Athlon 64 band wagon! Purchased it about a week ago and I’m loving it!!
I love building computers from scratch, why? Because it’s all about the freedom to customize. You can save a few bucks too by looking for cheap prices on parts and not having to pay for labor from the manufacture.
Before you build a computer you need to find a housing for it. I selected the Antec Super LANBOY case. I love the silver look and it looks great with the front 120 mm lighted fan. It’s made of light weight anodized aluminum great for LAN parties. It also comes with carrying straps for easy towing, inside the front cover there is a compartment that slides out when pushed on to hold tools and extra supplies. Also front headphone and mic jack, 2xUSB 2.0 all on the slick chrome strip.
The case have a pre-mod side window to show off your serious hardware. It is of high quality construction and it’s large enough to see everything inside the case clearly. The rear also have a 120 mm fan (clear) included with the case. The height is shorter than regular mid-towers but it’s wider and longer. It’s wider because of how the hard drive is installed, sideways, and it sit on a slide out tray for easy install. There are also rubber washers to where the hard drive is screwed on to the tray to reduce vibration. The 120 mm fans are low flow, therefore they’re quiet, you can barely hear it when the room is quiet.
OK, time for the system specs:
- Fortran FSP350-60PN 350W power supplies (120 mm adjustable speed fan)
- Abit KV8-MAX3
- AMD Athlon 64 3200
- Thermaltake Venus 12 heatsink (variable fan speed, that giant knob in pic 2)
- Corsair XMS Extreme Series 512MB PC3200 with LED activity indicator (as you can see at the 4th pic right next to the heatsink the row of vertical LEDs, that’s the RAM doing some work)
- Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM (slot loaded)
- Seagate 200GB 7200RPM hard drive
- ATi Radeon 9700 Pro
There you have it folks, the system is rock solid and I didn’t encounter any problems during installation.

I’m still friggin with my Timex Sinclair zx80… Pretty basic…. I know…
Saw a creative setup just today where sombody built their whole system into a glass top coffee table…
Fliptop flatscreen… Keyboard that did a double cammed swing out from underneath…. Was pretty cool looking.
And here I sit in reallity, with my tower open and cooled by an external muffin fan from some old photocopier cuz I’m too lazy to find a matching fan for that thing inside that does all the thinking….
